Improving your energy label with glass and window frames

A better energy label increases the value of your home, lowers your energy bill and makes your home more comfortable. Glass and window frames are among the most impactful and visible improvements. But how much effect do they have, and when does it pay off?

How does the energy label work?

A home's energy label (from A++++ to G) shows how energy-efficient it is. It is calculated from the insulation values of the roof, façade, floor and windows, the type of heating system and whether there are solar panels or other sustainable generation. The insulation value of windows plays a direct role in the calculation through the Rc and U-values of the glass and the frames.

How many label steps are achievable?

The gain depends heavily on the starting situation. Some practical examples:

  • Replacing single glazing with HR++ glass: on average a gain of 1 to 2 label steps
  • Ordinary double glazing to HR+++ (triple glazing): about 1 extra label step
  • A combination of new frames and HR+++ glass: can reach 2 to 3 steps, depending on how much of the façade is glass

For a home with a lot of glass — large sliding doors, a dormer or many windows — the impact of replacing the glass is especially large.

The combination that delivers the most

For the biggest jump in label, we recommend tackling glass, frames and possibly doors at the same time. Each element contributes to the home's total heat loss. By doing everything in one project, the installation disruption happens only once and the cost per unit is lower.

Subsidies: what's possible?

Subsidies and financing options for home insulation depend on your situation, type of ownership and municipal policy. Some municipalities in the Veenendaal, Ede and Wageningen region have specific schemes. We're happy to inform you about the current options during our assessment. Note: subsidies always come with additional conditions.

What to expect during the work

After new glass and frames are installed, the value of the home has usually risen demonstrably, living comfort has noticeably improved and your monthly energy bill is lower. The disruption from installation is limited to one or a few days, depending on the size of the project.
