HR++ or HR+++ glass: what's the difference?

If you're thinking about replacing the glass in your home in Veenendaal or the surrounding area, you'll soon face the choice between HR++ and HR+++ glass. Both types insulate better than ordinary double glazing, but there are clear differences.

What is HR++ glass?

HR++ stands for high-efficiency glass with two layers. Between the panes is a space filled with argon gas, combined with a special coating that reflects heat back inside. The insulation value (U-value) of HR++ glass is usually around 1.1 W/m²K.

HR++ glass has been the most popular choice for home improvement for years: it is a clear improvement on ordinary double glazing, is widely available and offers good value for money.

What is HR+++ glass?

HR+++ glass has three layers of glass (triple glazing) with two cavities filled with argon or krypton and several coatings. This brings the U-value to around 0.5–0.7 W/m²K — considerably better than HR++. HR+++ glass also dampens sound very well, which makes it interesting for homes on busy roads too.

When do you choose which type?

  • HR++ is suitable for most renovation projects. It offers a good balance between insulation, price and weight. Ideal if you're not replacing the frames straight away but want to improve the glass.
  • HR+++ pays off most in new builds, when replacing frames at the same time, or if you're aiming for maximum energy savings. The heavier glass needs sturdy frames that can carry the weight.

Payback time

The exact payback time differs per situation, but as a rule of thumb: for an average home in or around Veenendaal, HR++ glass usually pays for itself within five to ten years through a lower energy bill. HR+++ glass costs more to buy but insulates better, so the payback time can be similar when you tackle frames and glass at the same time.
