A sliding door seamlessly connects your living room or bedroom to the garden or terrace. It's one of the most requested changes in renovations — and for good reason. But what should you look out for?
What is a sliding door?
A sliding door is a large glazed area with doors that slide sideways. They're available with two, three or more panels and can be made in aluminium or uPVC. Aluminium is the most popular choice for sliding doors because of its slim, stylish profiles and the possibility of creating large glass surfaces.
Safety glass: always required
Safety glass is required for sliding doors, usually laminated or toughened glass. On impact, this type of glass doesn't break into sharp pieces but into small, rounded fragments, or it stays in one piece. We always supply sliding doors with certified safety glass in line with Dutch building regulations.
Dimensions and custom work
A sliding door is made to measure. The width and height are determined by the wall opening. Sliding doors are typically 2.20 to 2.70 metres high, but taller versions are possible. We visit you to assess the situation and determine the right dimensions.
Insulation and thermal glass
Modern sliding doors come with HR++ glass as standard. HR+++ is also possible and recommended if you want maximum insulation. The profiles are thermally broken, so no thermal bridges occur.
Permit
In most cases no building permit is required to replace or install a sliding door in an existing opening. This is different when enlarging an opening or for listed buildings. Not sure? We're happy to advise you based on your specific situation and municipality.
